Please Don't Shop, Adopt!

Please! Don't Shop, Adopt!

A hug with "Beethoven"

Many people, in their search for a family pet, are drawn to pet shops or breeders, while there are so many animals at local shelters!  Currently, at the Barry County Animal Shelter, there are several adoptable dogs of many different breeds available.  Last week, before the holiday, I spent nearly 4 hours there, trying to give each dog some much wanted individual attention.  I truly found that each animal has its own personality and endearing qualities.  Each one wants, needs and deserves a loving home!  There are some very cuddly, small breed dogs - a sweet, little, Shih Tzu girl named "Sissy"; "Debo"an energetic MinPin; "Odie" an adorable, Miniature Poodle; two little Chihuahua friends; baby Pit mixes; and my friend "Beethoven", the Dauchshund Pom, pictured above!  There are also Huskies, ChowChows, Labs, Beagles, a Bassett Hound, an Australian Shepherd/Collie mix, a Saint Bernard, a Shar Pei and last but not least, all of my Pit Bull/Boxer mix friends!

So if you are looking for a loving, new addition to your family - Please!, Please!, Don't Shop, Adopt!

While you're out doing holiday shopping, please take time to visit the Barry County Animal Shelter to see all of these sweethearts who are just waiting for someone to give them forever homes.

Gidget Gets Adopted!

I just got the update this morning, Gidget has officially been adopted!

For the past few months, since being pulled from the Barry County Animal Shelter, Gidget was a first foster dog for a member of  New Rattitudes Rescue's foster program.  It only took a couple of months for Gidget to find a forever home!
A happy ending to this dog tale! :)

For Pittie's Sake!

Time may be running out for some of our Pit Bull mix friends at the shelter!

There are so many sweet dogs at the Barry County Animal Shelter and many of them are Pit Bull mixes.  There are some adults, young adults (about one year old), a stray pup who looks about 4 months old, and 7 pups just dropped off on Saturday!  These dogs are all sweethearts with their own distinct personalities.  Some are energetic and playful, while others are shy and want to nuzzle or just sit by you.  Pit Bulls, Pit Mixes and Boxers are some of the most misunderstood breeds.  These dogs can be a most loving and loyal addition to anyone's family.  I have just fallen in love with these dogs! They are very attractive animals with soulful eyes, a stout, muscular body structure, and mouths that smile when receiving praise or when they're just plain happy to be by your side.  I wish I could take them all! Please tell your family and friends to visit the shelter to take a look at who is there, just waiting for a loving home!

Gidget Gets Rescued!

Back in September, 2012, there was a little, adorable Rat Terrier girl at the shelter.  She had been on hold for almost a month, awaiting news from her owner to see if she would be reclaimed.  Finally, her previous owner decided that they did not want her, and she was available for adoption.

By this time, she had been at the shelter for so long that she had become desperate.  I had been keeping an eye on her status and had been observing her behaviors.  Poor Gidget was beside herself with anxiety.  Her behaviors had changed from energetic tail-wagging to crying and shrill yipping.  When she was taken out for walks, she would yelp and roll-over on her back, crying.  During my visits, I just held her on my lap, talking to her softly to calm her down.  When I asked if anyone had seemed interested in adopting her, I was told that she was being dismissed by potential adopters, because she was too "yippy and annoying".  Usually the small breed dogs have the best chance of being adopted immediately.  I became worried about Gidget being unadoptable.  If I could have taken her, I would have.  My concerns led me to many sleepless nights, worrying about this adorable little girl.  I asked everyone I knew if they would be interested, and then I researched Rat Terrier rescue groups in Michigan. I finally came across a rescue called New Rattitude Rat Terrier Rescue.  I e-mailed and informed them of my urgent concerns for Gidget.  Sue Kangas, an awesome rescuer took on her case, and she was pulled from the shelter to be fostered.  I was thrilled to be able to provide transportation.  During the day I spent with Gidget, I was pleased to see her return to her normal, sweet self.  She even fell asleep on my lap during the car ride to Lansing!

Rewarding days like this are what keeps me going!

Annie, A Sweet Mature Dog

This is Annie!  She greets you at the gate with a smile you just can't resist and wags her tail so hard that she moves her whole body!  She's mature but still full of energy and loves to run and play.  Come and meet her - you're going to love her!
(Available for adoption at the Barry County Animal Shelter)

AdoraBull Shelter Dogs

Izabella is an adoraBull, patient and passive girl.  Please help us help her find a loving home.

This cute, shy boy is so sweet.  He was so shy that we could barely walk him without stepping on him.  He hugged our knees and sat in our laps.  Be careful when you look into his eyes, because you'll feel your heart melt!

Here's another little honey.  She is also very sweet and shy.  We called her our "clinging vine" because she will lean against you when you walk her and then put her head on your shoulder when she sits on your lap.

This is Kota a very handsome, patient boy.  He is energetic but very eager to please.  I believe that he is very trainable and is housebroken.

We call this guy Beau, because he is such an attractive, muscular young fella.  He is bursting with energy and loves to run and play outside.  He is a really nice dog and needs to be with a family who will celebrate his love of life and playfulness.  He is desperate to find a forever home with someone to love!

All of these adorable, adoptable Pit Bull mixes can be found at the Barry County Animal Shelter!  Please pay them a visit, and tell your friends and family about them.
